Mrs. Willie Ann Coats Drew

Mrs. Willie Ann Drew of South Boston, VA died Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Sentara Woodview at the age of 81.

Mrs. Drew was born in Birmingham, AL on November 22, 1937 to the late Mr. Bryant Coats and Mrs. Sylvia Coats. She was married to the late Mr. Elie Drew and was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Drew is survived by (1) son: Mr. James Roy Coats (Christine); (1) grandson: Mr. Keith A. Carper and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by (10) siblings.  

Funeral services for Mrs. Willie Ann Drew will be held Tuesday, May 28th at 11 a.m. at Mountain Grove Baptist Church with Elder William Howerton officiating. 

Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 27th from noon until 3 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the service.

Mr. Clifton Ray Strange

Mr. Clifton Ray Strange of Raleigh, NC died Wednesday, May 15th at his residence at the age of 37.

Mr. Strange was born March 15, 1982 in South Boston, VA to Mr. Harvey Strange and Mrs. Ruth Clark Strange and was a United States Air Force Veteran. 

Mr. Strange is survived by his father and mother: Mr. Harvey Strange and Mrs. Ruth Strange of South Boston, VA; (1) sister: Ms. Danna L. Ford; maternal grandmother: Ms. Gracie Clark; paternal grandmother: Ms. Katherine Strange, both of South Boston, VA; his god mother: Ms. Gail Chandler; (2) nephews; (1) niece; (2) great nieces; (2) great nephews and a host of aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends. 

Funeral services for Mr. Clifton Ray Strange will be held Saturday, May 25th at 2 p.m. at Crystal Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Louis S. Leigh as eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. Harvey and Mrs. Ruth Strange, 1410 Porter Lane, South Boston, VA.

LAWRENCE LEON MARTIN

​Mr. Lawrence Leon “Dog” Martin of Sinai Road, South Boston, VA died Thursday, May 16th at his residence at the age of 65.

Leon was born February 3, 1954 in South Boston, VA to Mrs. Louise Freeman Martin and the late James Martin, Sr. He was formerly employed by J.P. Stevens, Daystorm Furniture and RTP Company.

Leon is survived by (2) children: Ms. Sclyna WyNessa Martin of Killeen, TX and Mr. Shannon Martin (Stephanie) of Garber, OK; his mother: Mrs. Louise Freeman Martin of South Boston, VA; (5) grandchildren; (2) brothers: Mr. Gary Martin and Mr. Willie Martin, both of South Boston, VA; (2) sisters: Mrs. Martha Martin Ballou (Herbert) of South Boston, VA and Mrs. Clara Pettus (Randy) of Glen Allen, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and devoted friends, including Mr. Dock Trent. In addition to his father, Leon was preceded in death by (2) brothers: Mr. James E. Martin, Jr. (Freda), and Mr. Lloyd Martin.

Funeral services Leon will be held Thursday, May 23rd at 11 a.m. at The Crawford House chapel in Halifax, VA at with Rev. E. Naomi Bouldin, officiating and Bishop Allen Graves, eulogist.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. at The Crawford House chapel. The family will receive friends at the residence, 2180 Sinai Road, South Boston, VA.

Mrs. Catherine Sydnor Farrar

Catherine Sydnor Farrar of Nathalie VA went to see her Lord on May 13, 2019 after a time of illness in Chase City Rehab Nursing Home.

Catherine was born on August 30, 1953 to her birth mother Arminta S. Lowery of South Boston VA. She gave her life to the Lord in 1992 in her rebirth experience. She was preceded in death by her son: Mike Farrar; her adopted father and mother: James and Elizabeth Canada; two brothers: Frank and Christopher Ray Sydner, and a father-in-law: Amos Farrar.

  Catherine leaves behind her loving husband Wayne Farrar of Nathalie VA; one son: John Farrar of Nathalie VA; one daughter: Crystal Farrar of Chesterfield VA; (2) brothers: Beaver Lowery of South Boston, VA, and Kim Sydner of Zabulon, NC; mother-in-law: Jannie Farrar of Halifax Co; three sisters-in-law: Edna Wimbush (Silas) of Lynchburg VA, Shirley Williams (Ray) of Nathalie VA, and Rose Farrar of Maryland; Four brothers-in-law: Eugene Farrar (Delios) of Halifax County, VA, Wesley Farrar (Maxine) of Lynchburg VA, Willie Farrar of Richmond VA, and Ronnie Farrar (Jackie) of Reston VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

The service will be held at the Crawford House Chapel, 725 North Main Street, Halifax VA on Monday, May 20th at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will take place on Sunday, May 19th from 12 - 6 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home, South Boston, VA. Graveside services will be held directly after the service at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 4026 Morton's Ferry Road, Nathalie VA.

Mr. John Ricardo “Ricky” Williams

Mr. John Ricardo “Ricky” Williams of Springdale Drive, South Boston, VA died Tuesday, May 14th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 62.

Mr. Williams was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 25, 1956 to Mrs. Vivian Evans Williams and the late Mr. John Oliver Williams. He was married to Mrs. Linda Logan Williams and was a member of First Baptist Church, News Ferry,VA.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife: Mrs. Linda L. Williams of the home; (1) daughter: Ms. Cindy Williams of Charlotte, NC; (1) son: Mr. John E. Williams of Gastonia, NC; (1) granddaughter: Misses Jelena Kali Williams of Gastonia, NC; his mother: Mrs. Vivian Evans Williams of Dearborn Heights, MI; (1) sister: Ms. Courtney Quitman of Philadelphia, PA; (2) brothers: Mr. Jason Quitman of Michigan and Mr. Gilbert Quitman of Philadelphia, PA; (3) uncles: Mr. Randolph Williams of Philadelphia. Funeral services for Mr. John Ricardo “Ricky” Williams will be held on Tuesday, May 21st at 11:00 a.m. with services at First Baptist Church, News Ferry, VA with Rev. Ronnie Keene officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mae Evelyn Chandler Jones 

Mrs. Mae Evelyn Chandler Jones of Bill Tuck Hwy. South Boston, VA died on Saturday, May 11th in Georgia at the age of 80.

Mrs. Jones was born May 29, 1938 in Person County, North Carolina to the late Mr. Luther Chandler and Mrs. Theresa Cousins Chandler. She was married to the late Mr. Joseph Addison Jones and was a member of White Oak Fork Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mae Evelyn Jones is survived by (2) sons: Rodney Jones and wife Jade Jones, Darrell Jones and fiancée, Keisha Lunsford; (1) daughter: Tracy Jacks and fiancé, Elwood Friend; (1) goddaughter: Jamie Graves; (7) grandchildren: Taylor and husband, Telvin, Derron, Trinity, Nyla, Sabrina, Kariana and Milania; (1) great granddaughter: Wynter; (1) brother: Cleo Chandler and wife Dessie Chandler; (1) sister: Lillian C. Woods; (2) sisters-in-law: Ethel Hall and Janie Hughes; (1) brother-in-law: Henry Jefferson Jones; (1) aunt: Edna Fountain; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mae Evelyn Chandler Jones will be held Monday, May 20th at 11 a.m. at White Oak Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Glenn Faulkner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Oveda Carr Beard

Mrs. Oveda Carr Beard of Hedderly Street, Halifax, VA died Friday, May 10th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 74.

Mrs. Beard was born in New York on May 14, 1944 to the late Mr. Robert Benard Carr, Sr. and Mrs. Maxine Coleman Carr. She was married to Mr. Claude Beard and was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Beard is survived by her husband: Mr. Claude Beard of the home; (1) son: Mr. Jimmie Allen Monroe (Cassie) of Raleigh, NC; (1) grandchild: Jordan A. Monroe; (1) brother: Mr. Robert Bernard Carr, Jr. (Juanita) of Halifax, VA; a host of nieces, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by (1) brother: Mr. David Carr.

Funeral services for Mrs. Oveda Carr Beard will be held on Thursday, May 16th at 11 a.m. at Banister Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. William Carr officiating. Burial will follow in Banister Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

 MRS. JESSIE FELTON TUCK

Mrs. Jessie Felton Tuck of Virgilina, VA died Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at Sentara Meadowview Terrace at the age of 86.

Mrs. Tuck was born in New York on March 28, 1933 to the late Mr. Mordese Felton and Mrs. Martha Carrington Felton. She was married to the late Mr. Arthur Clarence Tuck and was a member of Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Tuck is survived by (2) grandsons: Mr. Clarence R. Tuck, II and Mr. Tariq Ramar Tuck, both of South Boston, VA; (1) great grandson: Mr. Brandon Ramar Tuck of South Boston, VA; (1) sister: Ms. Catherine Felton Fitzgerald of Washington, DC; (1) daughter-in-law: Ms. Barbara Betts Tuck of South Boston, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by (1) son: Mr. Clarence Royal Tuck, Sr., (1) daughter: Mrs. Zelda Tuck Richardson; (2) sisters: Mrs. Evelyn Felton Carpenter and Mrs. Geneva Felton Tuck; (1) brother: Mr. Thomas Felton; and (1) son-in-law: Mr. Thomas Richardson.

  MRS. SALUDA ZELMA DABBS CARRINGTON

Mrs. Saluda Zelma Carrington of Saluda’s Lane, Clover, VA died Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at her residence at the age of 87.

Mrs. Carrington was born in Halifax County, VA on May 10, 1931 to the late Mr. James Dabbs and Mrs. Lola Hudson Dabbs. She was married to the late Mr. Beverly Carrington, Jr. and was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carrington is survived by (3) daughters: Ethel D. Johnson (Jerry) of Indianapolis, IN, Joyce A. Garrett of South Boston, VA, and Janice C. Lacks (Ronnie) of Clover, VA; (3) sons: Shirley K. Carrington, Beverly K. Carrington and Malcolm R. Carrington, Sr. (Wallicia), all of Clover, VA; (1) son-in-law: Deacon Frank Clark of Clover, VA; (10) grandchildren; (9) great grandchildren; (4) sisters: Estelle Edmondson, Lillian Edmondson, Mary Dabbs and Lottie Morton; (4) sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by (1) son: Lloyd H. Carrington; (1) daughter: Virginia L. Mrs. Rosa Lee Tucker Kirby

Mrs. Rosa Lee Tucker Kirby of Mountain Road, Halifax, VA died Saturday, May 4th at her residence at the age of 84.

Mrs. Kirby was born in Halifax County, VA on October 19, 1934 to the late Mr. Patrick James Tucker, Sr. and the late Mrs. Elsie Lee Stewart Tucker. She was married to the late Mr. Nelson Kirby, Jr. and was a member of Republican Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kirby is survived by (6) children: Georgia “Joyce Ann” Lovelace, Janet Lee Gregory, Linda Lou Berger, Waverly Pannell (Jacqueline) Bruce Pannell, Sr. (Rachel), all of South Boston, VA, and Charles Pannell of Brookneal, VA; (2) children reared from birth: Angela Henrriquez (Elder) of Nathalie, VA and Stephanie Green (Joseph) of South Boston, VA; (1) adopted granddaughter: Christine Walker (Darnell) of South Boston, VA; (1) sister: Willie Mae Terry of Brookneal, VA; (23) grandchildren; (36) great grandchildren; (4) nieces; (3) nephews; (7) sisters-in-law; (3) brothers-in-law; and a host of other relatives and devoted friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Lee Kirby will be held Friday, May 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Republican Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Steadman Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Ms. Rosa Canada Terry

Ms. Rosa Canada Terry of Halifax, VA died Thursday, May 2nd at her residence at the age of 64.

Ms. Terry was born in Halifax County, VA on July 23, 1954 to the late Mr. Lacy Coleman and Mrs. Mary Canada Coleman. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and retired from the former J. P. Stevens Company after 30 years of service. Ms. Terry was later employed by Sentara Woodview for many years.

Ms. Terry is survived by (1) son: Clifton “Steve” Terry of the home; (2) grandchildren: Taquan Terry of Woodbridge, VA and Jakiyah Terry of Yanceyville, NC; (1) brother: Henry Canada of Halifax, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including (2) devoted friends: Catherine Chandler and Evon Sims. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by (1) brother: Charles “Head” Canada

Ms. Mary Ellen Sweeney

Ms. Mary Ellen Sweeney of Ball Park Loop, Halifax, VA died Monday, April 29th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 98.

Ms. Sweeney was born in Halifax County, VA on April 12, 1921 to the late Mr. Bishop Sweeney and Mrs. Edna Leigh Sweeney. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

Ms. Sweeney is survived by (2) nieces: Ms. Karen Manzano of Jersey City, NJ and Ms. Gloria Valdes; (1) nephew: Mr. Robert Sweeney of Bowie, MD and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by (4) brothers: Mr. Joseph Sweeney, Mr. George Sweeney, Mr. Robert Sweeney and Mr. Frank Sweeney and (1) sister: Mrs. Edna Clark.

Funeral services for Ms. Mary Ellen Sweeney will be held on Saturday, May 4th at 11 a.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home Chapel in South Boston with Rev. Louis Leigh officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothy King Stephens 

Mrs. Dorothy King Stephens of Virgilina Road, Virgilina, VA died Sunday, April 28th at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA at the age of 96.

Mrs. Stephens was born in Burlington, NC on September 22, 1922 to the late Daniel King and Claytor Spencer King. She was married to the late Joe Henry Stephens and was a member of Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Stephens is survived by (3) daughters: Sheila K. Campbell of South Chesterfield, VA, Hulda M. Foust of Mebane, NC and Dorothy Tutt Parham (Jacob) of Petersburg, VA; (3) sons: Joe D. Stephens (Minnie) of Halifax, VA, Frederick D. Stephens (Michaela) of El Paso, TX and Roger G. Stephens of Suffolk, VA; (1) step-daughter: Mae Muriel Pointer of Milton, NC; (1) step-son: Waverly Stephens of Milton, NC; (17) grandchildren; (27) great grandchildren; (1) brother: John T. King; (1) daughter-in-law: Gwendolyn Tutt; (1) sister-in-law: Elizabeth Stephens; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including the devoted Claudette E. Paniel.
