OBITUARY NOTICES

JAMES HOOD, JR.

Dr. James Hood, Jr. of Martinsville, VA, died Thursday, September 12th at his residence at the age of 75.

Dr. Hood was born in Pittsylvania County on July 5, 1944 to the late Mr. James E. Hood and Mrs. Katie B. Barksdale Hood and was married to Mrs. Zelma I. Farmer Hood. He was a member of The Church of Jesus in Hampton, VA and later pastor of Ebenezer Pentecostal Holiness Church in Martinsville, VA.

Dr. Hood is survived by his wife: Mrs. Zelma I. Hood of the home; (1) daughter: Ms. Sharon L. Hood of Hampton, VA; (1) son: Elder Stanley D. Hood, Sr. (Evangelist Eleecia S. Hood) of Newburg, N.Y; (3) grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Josie Crouch and Luessie Gerald of Washington, DC, Jeanette Roberson (Terrance) of Maryland, Lawrence Hood of Gretna, VA, Annie Reid of Blairs, VA, Ernest Hood (Cynthia) of Danville, VA and Kervin Hood of Manassas, VA; step mother: Mrs. Pearl Hood; (4) step-brothers and sisters: Anthony Garrett, Derreck Garrett, Sharron Harris (Anthony) and Karen Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by (1) brother: Mr. Linwood Hood.

Funeral services for Dr. James Hood, Jr. will be held on Saturday, September 21st at 2 p.m. at White Stone Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Deacon James Edward Carden

Mr. James Edward Carden of Scottsburg, VA died Saturday, September 14th at The Woodview at the age of 82.

Mr. Carden was born in Harlem, N.Y. on April 20, 1937 to the late Mr. Banister Carden and Mrs. Lois R. Carden. He was married to the late Mrs. Havana Richards Carden and was a Deacon at Spanish Grove Baptist Church. 

Mr. Carden is survived by his (2) daughters: Mrs. Darlene Carden Davis (Floyd) of South Boston, VA and Mrs. Erlene Carden Sydnor (Avery) of Scottsburg, VA; (4) grandchildren; (6) great grandchildren; (1) sister-in-law: Mrs. Vernetta Warren of Peekskill, NY; (1) uncle: Mr. Matthew Carden of Somerset, NJ; a devoted friend: Mr. Wendell “Buck” Carden and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. James Edward Carden will be held Saturday, September 21st at 11:00 a.m. with services at Spanish Grove Baptist church with Pastor Rev. Ronnie Womack eulogist and Rev. Alfred Chandler presiding. Burial will follow in church Cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends at the residence.

MRS. DOROTHY DIXON MILLS

Mrs. Dorothy Dixon Mills formerly of Sinai Road, Halifax VA died Wednesday, September 11th in North Dinwiddie, VA at the age of 77.

Mrs. Mills was born in Halifax County, VA on February 7, 1942 to the late Mr. Huler Dixon, Sr. and Mrs. Etta Jane Coleman Dixon. She was married to the late Mr. Earnest Mills, Jr. and was a member of County Line Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mills is survived by (3) daughters: Ms. Linda M. Scott of North Dinwiddie, VA, Ms. Ernestine Mills of Henrico, VA, Ms. Kimberly S. Mills of Troy, VA; (1) son: Mr. Gregory L..Mills (Jeanette) of Glen Allen, VA; (8) grandchildren; (1) great granddaughter; (2) brothers: Mr. John E. Dixon (Dorothy) of Halifax, VA and Mr. Huler Dixon, Jr. (Patricia) of Washington, DC; (6) sisters: Ms. Naomi Fitzgerald of Danville, VA, Mrs. Eunice Marie Stone (Hosea) of Dry Fork, VA, Mrs. Gradie Pearl Miller (Larry) of Decatur, GA, Mrs. Debra Mickens (Steward) of Lanham, MD, and Mrs. Alma Jean Chaney(James) of Ringgold, VA; (6) sisters-in-law:Ms. Dorothy Dixon, Ms. Francine Dixon, Ms. Carol Edmunds, Ms. Louise Ballou, Ms. Mary Dixon, and Mrs. Shirley Woody (Calvin); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by (5) brothers: Vernet, Bobby, Earlie, Robert, and Wayne Dixon.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Dixon Mills will be held on Thursday, September 19th at 1:00 p.m. at Union Grove C.M. E. Church with Rev. Shirley Woody as eulogist. Burial will follow in Union Grove C.M.E. Church cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Wednesday, September 18th from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home.

LOUIS TYRONE MUSE

Mr. Louis Tyrone “Tye” Muse of Glen Allen, VA and formerly of Halifax County died Friday, September 6th at his residence at the age of 67.

Mr. Muse was born in Halifax County, VA on June 2, 1952 to the late Mr. Louis Ernest Muse and Mrs. Iretha Edmonds Muse. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

Mr. Muse is survived by (1) daughter: Mrs. Andrea Knowles (Leon) of Glen Allen, VA; (1) son: Dr. Louis Muse, Jr. (Laura) of Browns Summit, NC; (5) grandchildren; (3) sisters: Mrs. Lois Wallace (Raphael), Ms. Geraldine Davis and Mrs. Yetta Patterson (Julius); (2) brothers: Mr. Kevin Muse and Mr. Eric Muse; (1) aunt and uncle; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was precede in death by (1) sister: Mrs. Betty Gail Jordan and (2) brothers: Mr. Theodore Muse and Mr. Dwight Muse.

CARTER CLAIBORNE, JR.

Mr. Carter Claiborne, Jr. of Queens, NY and formerly of Halifax County, VA died Thursday, August 29th at Dry Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens, NY at the age of 87.

Mr. Claiborne was born in Halifax County on October 11, 1931 to the late Mr. Carter Claiborne, Sr. and Mrs. Elizabeth Faulkner-Claiborne. He was married to Mrs. Christine Tucker-Claiborne and was a U S Army Veteran. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY and a previous member of First Baptist Church. 

Mr. Claiborne is survived by his wife: Mrs. Christine Tucker-Claiborne of Queens, NY; (2) daughters: Ms. Jean La’Verne Claiborne and Mrs. Sandra Faulkner-Douglas, both of Queens, NY; (1) son: Mr. Kevin Faulkner of Pennsylvania; (5) grandchildren; (1) great grandchild; (1) sister: Mrs. Lula Claiborne-Olds of Danville, VA; (1) brother: Mr. William Bryant Claiborne (Harriett) of South Boston, VA; (3) sisters-in-law: (2) brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Claiborne was preceded in death by (4) sisters: Ms. Connie M. Claiborne, Mrs. Pattie Claiborne-Younger, Mrs. Irene Claiborne-Peters and Mrs. Dorothy Claiborne-Braithwaite; (1) brother: Mr. William Joseph Claiborne; (8) brothers-in-law and (3) sisters-in-law.

Funeral services for Mr. Carter Claiborne, Jr. will be held Wednesday, September 11that 11:00 a.m. with services at First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston, VA with Rev. Dr. Allan G. Smith, Sr. officiating and Rev. Hayward Jennings as eulogist. Burial will follow in Rose Garden Cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. William Bryant Claiborne and Mrs. Harriett Claiborne, 1183 River Road, South Boston, VA.

MRS. SALLIE ANN CHAMBERS

Mrs. Sallie Ann Chambers of L.P. Bailey Memorial Hwy, Halifax VA died Monday, September 2nd at Sentara Woodview at the age of 89.

Mrs. Chambers was born in Halifax County, VA on March 16, 1930 to the late Mr. Hurley Traynham and Mrs. Nannie Wimbush Traynham. She was married to the late Mr. Willie H. Chambers and was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Mrs. Sallie Ann Chambers is survived by (7) daughters: Mrs. Margaret Chambers Tucker, Ms. Catherine Davis, Mrs. Josephine Williams (John), Ms. Mary Johnson, all of Halifax, VA, Ms. Lucille Waller Williams, Ms. Patricia Byrd and Ms. Virginia Jones, all of South Boston, VA; (2) sons: Mr. David Chambers of Graham, NC, and Mr. Gene Chambers of Alexandria, VA; (3) sisters-in-law; (1) brother-in-law; (22) grandchildren; (24) great grandchildren; (28) great great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by (1) daughter: Ms. Jeanette Chambers; (3) sons: Mr. Calvin Chambers, Mr. Willie Howard Chambers, JR and Mr. Larry Chambers and (2) sisters: Ms. Addie Traynham and Mrs. Sylvester Jerkins.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie Ann Chambers will be held on Monday, September 9th at 1:00 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

MRS. ROSA ANN PERKINS

Mrs. Rosa Ann Perkins of Charlotte, NC and formerly of Halifax County, VA died Tuesday, August 27th at her residence at the age of 72.

Mrs. Perkins was born in Halifax County on January 6, 1947 to the late Mr. Nephew Staten and Mrs. Alice Carden Staten. She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Perkins is survived by (3) daughters: Ms. Tammy D. McCluney, Mrs. Tanya D. Alexander (Duan), all of Charlotte, NC and Mrs. Trina D. Thompson (Galvinus) of Tampa, FL; (1) son: Mr. Charles D. Perkins (Kimberly) of Cincinnati, OH; (7) grandchildren; (5) sisters: Mrs. Odessa Staten Crews and Mrs. Faye Staten Brown (Leon), all of Temple Hills, MD, Ms. Vivian Staten of Oakland, CA, Mrs. Mable Staten Haddock and Ms. Brenda Staten, both of New York, NY; (2) brothers: Mr. Ralph Staten, Sr. (Vealer) of South Boston, VA and Mr. James Staten (Jewel) of Richmond, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Perkins was preceded in death by her brother, Mr. Bill Staten and granddaughter, Ms. Nadia McCluney.

                          MS. IRENE THOMPSON SAWYER

Mrs. Irene Thompson Sawyer of Cowford Road, Halifax VA died Tuesday, August 27th at her residence at the age of 97.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Halifax County, VA on April 7, 1922 to the late Mr. William Thompson and Mrs. Rosa Tucker Thompson. She was married to the late Mr. Coleman Sawyer and was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Irene Thompson Sawyer is survived by (1) granddaughter; Mrs. Chrissy Harry (Raymond); (1) grandson: Brent Washington (Amanda); (3) great grandsons: Sammie, Thomas, and Danny; (3) nephews: Mr. Herman Richardson (Marie), Mr. Stanley Richardson and Mr. Randy Goode; A very special friend: Mrs. Lorraine Dance of Halifax, VA; (3) special caregivers: Ms. Brenda Ballou, Ms. Pam Lacks, and Ms. Marie Richardson; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by (1) daughter: Margaret.

MRS. CAROLYN CLARK

Ms. Carolyn Clark of South Boston, VA passed away Thursday, August 29th at Berry Hill Rehabilitation Center at the age of 73.

Ms. Clark was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 17, 1946 to the late Mr. James M. Clark and Mrs. Lillian Burns Clark. 

Ms. Clark is survived by (3) brothers; (1) sister; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

Public viewing for family and friends will be Thursday, September 5th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Crawford House Chapel in Halifax, VA. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York.

                    MR. WILLIE "BILL" MASON BOULDEN

Mr. Willie “Bill” Mason Boulden, Jr. of South Boston, VA died Friday, August 30th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 79.

Mr. Boulden was born in Halifax County on October 8, 1939 to the late Mr. Willie Mason Boulden, Sr. and Mrs. Dorothy Faulkner Jennings. He was married to Mrs. Lottie Mae Boulden and was a member of First Baptist Church, Ferry Street, South Boston, VA. 

Mr. Boulden is survived by his wife of 58 years: Mrs. Lottie Mae Boulden; (3) children: Mr. Leonardo Boulden (Kim) of Chester, VA, Mrs. Wanda Boulden-White (Tyboice) of Hampton, VA and Ms. Michele Boulden of Virginia Beach, VA; (7) grandchildren; (4) great grandchildren; (1) brother: Mr. William Boulden; (2) sisters-in-law; (3) godchildren; (2) best friends: Mr. Sam Tucker and Mr. William Faulkner; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. MS. LINDA DARNELL CARTER

Ms. Linda Darnell Carter formerly of Halifax County, VA died in Charlotte, NC, Monday, August 26th at her residence at the age of 74.

Ms. Carter was born in Halifax County, VA on August 15, 1945 to the late Mr. Otis James Carter, Sr. and Mrs. Essie Crews Carter. She was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church and later joined Friendship Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. 

Ms. Linda Darnell Carter is survived by (1) brother: Mr. Otis James Carter, Jr. (Charlotte) of Halifax, VA; (1) sister: Mrs. Marion Carter Stamps (Ellis) of Danville, VA; (2) aunts: Mrs. Barbara Martin of South Boston, VA and Ms. Jean Green of Arizona; sister-in-law: Mrs. Danita Carter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by (1) brother: Mr. Lawrence Carter.
