OBITUARY NOTICES

RAGLAND, JR., WILTON EDWARD​​
Mr. Wilton Edward Ragland, Jr. of South Boston, VA died Monday, November 11th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 72.


Mr. Ragland was born September 5, 1947 to the late Mr. Wilton Ragland, Sr. and Mrs. Lucille Nicholson Ragland. He was a United States Army veteran having served three years and earned his Juris Doctorate Degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law. For many years, Mr. Ragland practiced law in South Boston and Richmond, VA. He was a member and former Sunday School teacher at Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. 

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 16th at 1:00 p.m. at Ebenezer CME Church with Rev. Blanche Stewart as eulogist. 

In lieu of floral tributes, the family request donations to the Ebenezer CME Church, 2309 N. Main Street, South Boston, VA 24592.

MR. AL’TERIQUE JAMAL GOMES

Mr. Al’Terique Jamal Gomes of Nathalie, VA died Saturday, November 9th at the age of 23.

Mr. Gomes was born in Halifax County, VA on October 24, 1996 to Ms. Katrecia Powell and Mr. DeVaughn Gomes. At an early age he joined New Zion Baptist Church and was employed by Pacific Headwear, Inc.

Mr. Gomes is survived by his parents: Ms. Katrecia Powell of Nathalie, VA and Mr. DeVaugh Gomes; (2) brothers: Mr. Trajen Gomes of the home and Mr. Jamiro Quan (Noon) Sydnor of Martinsville, VA; his maternal grandmother: Ms. Janice Powell of the home; his paternal grandmother: Ms. Sheila Gomes of Raleigh, NC; his great grandfather: Mr. Earl C. Powell (Inez); (5) aunts; (5) uncles; and a host of great aunts, great uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends including Mr. Devin Jackson. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Mr. Douglas Powell and his paternal grandfather: Mr. Ricardo Gomes.

Funeral services for Mr. Al’Terique Jamal Gomes will be held Saturday November 16th at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Willie Yancey pastor and eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing will be Friday, November 15th from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1056 Lower Liberty Road, Nathalie, VA.

MS. CHRISTINE EDITH CLARK

Ms. Christine Edith Clark of South Boston, VA died Sunday, November 3rd at Riverside Health & Rehabilitation in Danville, VA at the age of 78.

Ms. Clark was born in Halifax County, VA on August 8, 1941 to Mrs. Bertha Robinson Clark Hundley and the late Mr. Carlton Clark. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.

Ms. Clark is survived by her grandchildren: Tamecia D. Medley of Roxboro, NC and Mr. Quentin Clark of Halifax, VA; (2) great grandchildren; (1) sister: Mucie Mitchell; (1) brother: Carlton R. Mitchell; (2) sisters-in-law: Maria Gaillard of Charleston, SC, and Kaye Clark of Spartanburg, SC; nieces and nephews: Gloria Clark, Howard Clark (Rhonda), Bertha Cross (Raymond), Ashley Clark, including a devoted friend Evelyn Diane Clark (Joe); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by (1) daughter: Minnie Gill, (2) brothers: Howard J. Clark and Calvin Lee Mitchell; and (1) grandson: Master Anthony Clark. 

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, November, 16th at 2:00 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, South Boston, VA.

MRS. IRENE CARDEN POWELL

Mrs. Irene Carden Powell of Scottsburg, VA died Monday, November 11th at her residence at the age of 88.

Mrs. Powell was born in Halifax, VA on December 19, 1931 to the late Mr. Willie Carden and Mrs. Creola Mosley Carden. She was married to the late Deacon George Samuel Powell and was a member of Spanish Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Powell is survived by (2) daughters: Mrs. Adell Brooks (Charlie) of Randolph, VA and Ms. Barbara Powell of the home; (2) sons: Mr. Louis J. Powell (Janice) of Columbus, GA and Mr. Alphonso Powell of Columbus, OH; (14) grandchildren; (15) great grandchildren; (2) great-great grandchildren; (1) brother: Mr. Wendell (Buck) Carden (Marilyn) of Scottsburg, VA; (3) sisters: Mrs. Willie Mae Coleman of Lynchburg, VA, Mrs. Emma Brook (Arthur) of Brentwood, MD and Ms. Ollie McLemore of Scottsburg, VA; (2) sisters-in-law; (1) brother-in-law; a devoted daughter-in-law; Mrs. Patricia Powell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, devoted friends and caregivers. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by (2) sons: Mr. Miron Powell and Mr. Nelson Powell; (2) brothers: Mr. Burnell Carden and Mr. Cornelius Carden.

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Carden Powell will be held Friday, November 15th at 11 a.m. at Spanish Grove Baptist Church with Ronnie Womack pastor and eulogist and Rev. William Coleman presiding. Burial will follow at Church Cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Thursday, November 10th from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 1025 Hazelwood Mill Trail, Scottsburg, VA.

Mr. Joseph Christopher Owen

Mr. Joseph Christopher Owen of Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston, VA died November 4th at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 48.

Mr. Owen was born April 29, 1971 in South Boston, VA to Mr. Isaiah Owen, Jr. and Mrs. Jeanie Holeman Owen. He was a member of Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Owen is survived by (1) brother: Mr. Ansone Owen and wife, Treina Owen of Richmond, VA; special nieces and nephew: Kyra, Kamryn and Karson; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.  

Funeral services for Mr. Joseph Christopher Owen will be held Tuesday, November 12th at 1 p.m. at Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Graham Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Public viewing for family and friends will be Monday from noon until 8 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home, South Boston, VA. The family will be receiving friends at their residence, 1066 Cherry Hill Church Road, South Boston, VA.

   MR. CHRIS FORD, SR.

Mr. Chris Ford, Sr. of South Boston, VA died Tuesday, November 5th at Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC at the age of 69.

Mr. Ford was born in Halifax County, VA on March 7, 1950 to the late Mr. Donald Ford, Sr. and Mrs. Bessie Womack Ford and was married to Mrs. Sandra Williams Ford. At at an early age he joined The Presbyterian Church in South Boston, VA. and was employed by U.S. Plywood and Lasco Bathware. 

 Mr. Ford is survived by his wife: Mrs. Sandra Williams Ford of South Boston, VA; (2) sons: Shawn Ford (Bonita) and Chris Ford, Jr. all of South Boston, VA; (1) daughter: Christy Ford of Richmond, VA; (5) grandchildren; (1) great granddaughter; (1) brother: Donald C. Ford, Jr. (Celia), (2) sisters: Teresa Wiley (Phillip) and Diane Ford; (1) aunt: Margaret Womack; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. 

Funeral services for Mr. Chris Ford, Sr. will be held on Saturday, November 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Greater Mayfield Apostolic Church with Elder Bernard Wilkins officiating. Burial will follow in Murphy Grove Baptist Church cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Friday November 8th from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ford, Sr., 1409 Llewellyn Avenue, South Boston, VA

​MRS. SHIRLEY MAE CARR

Mrs. Shirley Mae Carr of Vernon Hill, VA died Friday, November 1st at her residence at the age of 69.

Mrs. Carr was born in Nathalie, VA on January 22, 1950 to Mrs. Clarine Farmer Marable and the late Mr. William “Inzy” Marable. She was married to Mr. Robert E. Carr and was a member of Traynham Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carr is survived by her husband: Robert E. Carr of the home; (3) children: Robert L. Carr, Jr. (Qamar), Timothy Carr and Tamika West (Sandy); (5) grandchildren; (1) great grandson; mother: Clarine Farmer Marable; (2) brothers: Darnell ”Larry” Marable (Lois) and Dennis Marable (Joan); (3) sisters: Barbara Dunkley (Lewis), Carolyn Monroe (Robert) and Debra Carr (James); (2) uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by (1) son: Rodney Lee Carr, (1) brother: Lawrence Edmonds and grandfather Silas Farmer.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shirley Mae Carr will be held Friday, November 8that 1:00 p.m. at Traynham Grove Baptist Church with Reverend William Keen officiating and, Apostle William Nowell as eulogist. Burial will follow at Sunflower Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Thursday, November 7th from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the residence, 3247 Ridge Road, Vernon Hill, VA.

Mr. MILTON ALVIN BARKSDALE, SR

Mr. Milton Alvin Barksdale, Sr. of Green Level Road, Scottsburg, VA died Thursday, October 31st at his residence at the age of 71.

Mr. Barksdale was born in Halifax County on July 15, 1948 to the late Mr. Earnest Barksdale and Mrs. Virgie Burns Barksdale and was married to Mrs. Josephine Barksdale. 

Mr. Barksdale is survived by his wife: Mrs. Josephine Barksdale of the home; (1) son: Mr. Milton A. Barksdale, Jr of Scottsburg, VA; (2) daughters: Ms. Teresa Garner of Richmond, VA and Mrs. Tonia Carden (Kelvin) of Scottsburg, VA; (4) grandchildren; (2) great grandchildren; (2) sisters: Mrs. Evelyn Coleman of Richmond, VA and Ms. Mary Claiborne of Halifax, VA; (2) brothers: Mr. Earnest Barksdale, Jr of Alexandria, VA and Mr. Jimmy Barksdale (Doris) of Boydton, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by (2) sisters: Mrs. Millie B. Green and Ms. Blair V. Barksdale; and (3) brothers: Mr. Roger L. Barksdale, Mr. Carl D. Barksdale and Mr. Jerry L. Barksdale.

Funeral services for Mr. Milton Alvin Barksdale, Sr. will be held Tuesday, November 5th at 1 p.m. with services at South Boston Church Of God. Burial will follow in Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. 

Public viewing will be Monday, November 4th from noon until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kelvin Carden, 1030 Green Level Road, Scottsburg, VA.

MS. FRANCES JEAN MITCHELL

Ms. Frances Jean Mitchell of South Boston, VA died Sunday, October 27th at her residence at the age of 84.

Ms. Mitchell was born in North Carolina on March 12, 1935 to the late Mr. Willis Mitchell and Mrs. Cora Jones Mitchell. She joined Philippi Baptist Church in Cofield, NC at an early age and later joined Christ Episcopal Church in Halifax, VA. Ms. Mitchell received her undergraduate and Master degrees from North Carolina A&T State University in Health and Physical Education. She began her career in education in the Philadelphia Public Schools and in 1959 became an educator at Mary M. Bethune High School and later at Halifax County High School. She retired in 1999.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a sister: Ms. Dorothy Revell of Detroit, MI; brother: Mr. Curtis Mitchell (Hilda) of Flint, MI; (3) nephews: Mr. Marvin Revell, Mr. Sean Mitchell and Mr. Jonathan Mitchell; (2) Nieces: Mrs. Kellye Mitchell Jackson and Ms. Suriah Mitchell; (4) cousins: Ms. Emma Sessoms, Ms. Edith Williams, Mr. Harvey Ellis and Ms. Stephanie Riley; and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by (4) brothers: Adrian, Rudolph, Ernest and Melvin Mitchell.

Funeral services for Ms. Frances Jean Mitchell will be held Saturday, November 2nd at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Christian Methodist Episcopal Church with Father Jim Mathieson eulogist. Burial will be at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery in Cofield, NC at a later date. 

Public viewing will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Jeffress Funeral Home and the family will receive friends at the residence, 1017 College Street, South Boston, VA.
